Chiropractic & Children/Babies

At Chiropractic for Life we have helped many newborn babies, infants and toddlers recover from various health and spinal problems by letting them experience the benefits of regular chiropractic care.
Many people forget to have their children checked for possible subluxations, forgetting the stresses that their delicate little spines have already been subjected to through their short lives to date.
The birth process can be very traumatic to a newborns head, neck and pelvis (even during a caesarian section). Doctors and midwives often check for possible dislocations at the hip joints, but ignore the pelvis and spinal bones.
Around 12 months later the child will begin to take their first few steps. A few tumbles are always had on the way, many of these will be harmless, however every now-and-then the physical stresses and strains begin to take a toll on the growing spine and problems can develop.
These stresses can weaken internal organs and organ systems, lower immunity, and delay the body's natural healing process.

Just as in adults, a child's spine that is free from nerve interference and vertebral subluxations, will be able to function at its most optimal level and may prevent future spinal health problems.
Other common childhood conditions that are also often helped by Chiropractic (and that we have witnessed first-hand at our clinic) include: colic, reflux, bedwetting, sleeping problems, ear infections, upset stomachs, sore throats, headaches and abnormal spinal curvatures.
Chiropractic is an effective and safe healthcare for children of all ages. Although some of the checking procedures may look very similar to that of an adult, many of the specialized chiropractic adjusting techniques do differ. This is because of the smaller nature of their bones and the developing muscle tissue.

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

It is fair to say that an expectant mother's health and wellbeing will have a direct effect on the health and development of the baby in utero.
As you are probably aware, many biomechanical and biochemical changes happen during pregnancy (e.g. increased hormone production, increased weight gain, change in posture & weight distribution – to name a few).
A mother's spine and pelvis will undergo many changes to help compensate for and accommodate the growing baby, which will increase the risk of nerve interferences and subluxations occurring in her spine.
These subluxations may adversely affect the baby's physical and neurological development.

Misalignments in the pelvis and lower spine region may compromise the pelvic opening, resulting in a less than perfect passage for the baby. Pelvic misalignments will also directly affect the surrounding muscles and ligaments causing an imbalance.
This imbalance will affect the way in which the uterus is supported, disallowing it to enlarge symmetrically affecting the baby's position inside (this is referred to 'intrauterine constraint').
As well as subluxations, intrauterine constraint can also affect the developing baby's pelvis, spine and cranium, limit the baby's movement in utero, and prevent the baby from getting into the best possible position ready for birth.
This can lead to longer and more painful labour, and increases the likelihood for medical intervention, such as a Caesarean section.
Regular Chiropractic adjustments throughout pregnancy will help to correct spinal and pelvic misalignments, and also remove any imbalance to the pelvic and uterine muscles and ligaments.
We have special cushions that are placed on our Chiropractic tables that allow us to check and adjust women in all stages of pregnancy.

Chiropractic & Elderly
We care for many elderly people here at Chiropractic for Life. Our oldest patient is currently 92 years. Chiropractic is very important for the older generation because of the structural changes that occur throughout their body due to the ageing process.
As you age, your spinal & pelvic bones begin to degenerate and their density decreases, your spinal discs dehydrate, and your muscles and ligaments begin to lose their elasticity. These changes can increase the stress and strain on the body's joints and alter weight-bearing & posture, increasing the likelihood of developing subluxations. In return, this can reduce immunity, cause aches & pains and prolong the body's natural healing process.
Chiropractic is a very safe and effective healthcare for the elderly. With weakened musculature, arthritic processes and osteoporosis in mind, specialized Chiropractic adjusting techniques have been adapted to suit everyone.

Chiropractic & Sports Performance

With sports being a great passion of ours, it is not unusual that here at Chiropractic for Life we see many people involved in, with or around sports. Most sports nowadays involve high body-contact, sudden stops and starts, repetitive motion, and awkward jolts, jerks and twists.
These all put a great deal of stress and strain on the spine, pelvis, extremity joints, spinal discs and corresponding ligaments, muscles and tendons. Occasionally these forces take a toll on the body causing problems in the non-spinal joints (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows & wrists), and can lead to subluxations in the spine and pelvis. These subluxations will affect nerve function, which can alter muscle firing potentials (reducing stamina & strength), pulmonary or breathing function, lymphatic drainage, blood circulation and limit range of motion.
Correcting these subluxations will help restore proper communication between the brain and the body, in particular the heart, lungs and muscles. In an athlete this is vital, as these problems may be the deciding factor between 1st and 2nd place.

The majority of sportsmen and sportswomen that initially seek care at our clinic have often been sidelined with injuries that they could have easily avoided. Many of them were masking their symptoms by taking pain-killers and anti-inflammatory medication. Not only were they delaying their body's natural healing abilities, they were not functioning at their peak performance, letting themselves and their teams down.
Their conditions were also gradually worsening from an acute stage to a chronic one. Now under care and realizing the dangers of what they had been doing, a lot of these patients have chosen to adopt a regular maintenance schedule, to help prevent or reduce future injuries, and enhance their health and sports performance.
So whether you are a mid-week or weekend leisure sports enthusiast or more of a high-profile endurance athlete, we will have a technique and care plan to suit you.
Our Chiropractors are all ACC registered and EVT Certified which enables them to assess, diagnose and correct non-spinal or extremity joint dysfunctions. We also offer a Full Body Thermal Traction Massage & Detox, which is highly sort after by many of our endurance athletes prior to their big events.
